RefWorks: Uninstalling WNC

This guide was developed for Canadian university students by Scholars Portal, a service of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL).

Uninstalling Write-N-Cite

Sometimes troubleshooting problems with the Write-N-Cite plugin for Microsoft Word requires completely uninstalling and reinstalling WNC. Select your operating system and version of Write-N-Cite below to find instructions:

Please note: It is very important that you follow all the instructions below in order to completely remove all components of Write-N-Cite from your system.

Uninstalling WNC4 for Windows 7

  1. First, make sure Microsoft Word is completely closed. You will need to uninstall WNC4 from the Windows Control Panel. Please make sure Microsoft Word is completely closed, then go to Start > Control Panel. From here, navigate to Programs and Features.

  2. Scroll through the list to find and select Write-N-Cite (signified by an orange icon), then click Uninstall and follow the prompts.
  3. Next, you will need to delete WNC's configuration files from two folders on your computer. Press the Start button, and in the Search programs and files box type %localappdata% and hit enter.
  4. This should load your Local AppData folder in Windows Explorer. At the bottom of the folder, you should see a series of files that start with "wnc." (If you don't see these files, go to Organize > Folder and search options, click on the View tab, and make sure Show hidden files, folders, and drives is selected). Select and delete all of the files that start with "wnc."
  5. Next, go to C:\Program Files (x86) and find the RefWorks-COS folder. Delete this entire folder. Then go to C:\Program Files and delete the RefWorks-COS folder here as well. (Please note: you may only have a RefWorks-COS folder in one of your Program Files folders).
  6. Finally, empty your Recycle Bin. WNC4 should now be completely removed from your computer. If you are planning to reinstall WNC4, please restart your computer before proceeding.

Uninstalling WNC4 for Windows XP

  1. First, make sure Microsoft Word is completely closed. You will need to uninstall WNC4 from the Windows Control Panel. Please make sure Microsoft Word is completely closed, then go to Start > Control Panel. From here, navigate to Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Scroll through the list to find and select Write-N-Cite (signified by an orange icon), then click Remove and follow the prompts.
  3. Next, you will need to delete the configuration files for WNC. To do this, go to Start > Run. Type in %%USERPROFILE%%, and click OK.

  4. This will open your C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR USERNAME]\ folder in Windows Explorer. From here, navigate to \Local Settings\Application Data. (If you don't see a folder called Local Settings, go to Tools > Folder Options, click on the View tab, and make sure Show hidden files, folders, and drives is selected). 
  5. At the bottom of the Application Data folder, you should see several files starting with "wnc." Select and delete all of these files.
  6. Finally, empty your Recyle Bin. WNC4 should now be completely removed from your computer. If you are planning to reinstall WNC4, please restart your computer before proceeding.

Uninstalling WNC4 for Mac

  1. In Microsoft Word, close the Write-N-Cite tool bar and navigate to View > Toolbars > Customize Toolbars and Menus. Choose Write-N-Cite from the menu, and choose Delete from from the right-hand menu.
  2. Close Microsoft Word. You will need to delete the bundle file in your Applications folder. Make sure that Word is compeletely closed, then open Finder, and navigate to Applications > Microsoft Office 2008/2011 > Office > Startup > Word > Write-N-Cite Word 2008/2011.bundle and drag the bundle file to your trash. Empty your trash.
  3. Next, you will need to delete the configuration files in your Library. The Library is hidden in Lion, but you can navigate to it in any version of OS X by hitting Command+Shift+G, then typing ~/Library/.
  4. Now navigate to Application Support and drag the entire RefWorks folder to your trash. Empty your trash.
  5. WNC4 should now be completely removed from your Mac. If you wish to reinstall WNC4, please restart your computer before proceeding.

Uninstalling WNC III for Windows 7

  1. First, make sure Microsoft Word is completely closed. You will need to uninstall WNC III from the Windows Control Panel. Please make sure Microsoft Word is completely closed, then go to Start > Control Panel. From here, navigate to Programs and Features.

  2. Scroll through the list to find and select Write-N-Cite (signified by a either a red and white icon, or a generic green and white application icon), then click Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.
  3. Next, you will need to delete WNC's configuration files from two folders on your computer. Press the Start button, and go to Documents.
  4. This should load your Documents folder in Windows Explorer. You should see a folder called refworks here. Select and delete this entire folder.
  5. Finally, empty your Recycle Bin. WNC III should now be completely removed from your computer. If you are planning to reinstall WNC, please restart your computer before proceeding.

Uninstalling WNC III for Windows XP

  1. First, make sure Microsoft Word is completely closed. You will need to uninstall WNC III from the Windows Control Panel. Please make sure Microsoft Word is completely closed, then go to Start > Control Panel. From here, navigate to Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Scroll through the list to find and select Write-N-Cite (signified by either a red and white icon, or a generic green and white application icon), then click Remove and follow the prompts.
  3. Next, you will need to delete the configuration files for WNC. To do this, go to Start > My Documents.
  4. This will open your My Documents folder in Windows Explorer. You should see a folder here called refworks. (If you don't see a folder called refworks, go to Tools > Folder Options, click on the View tab, and make sure Show hidden files, folders, and drives is selected). Select and delete this entire folder.
  5. Finally, empty your Recyle Bin. WNC III should now be completely removed from your computer. If you are planning to reinstall WNC, please restart your computer before proceeding.
