This guide was developed for Canadian university students by Scholars Portal, a service of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL).

Enabling pop-ups

Some databases use pop-up windows to export your references to RefWorks. If you're having trouble exporting references, please make sure you have pop-ups enabled in your browser. Select your browser below for instructions:

Firefox

If you are trying to export a reference from a database but it doesn't seem to work, check the top of your browser window to see if Firefox blocked a pop-up:

You can add the site as an exception by clicking on the Options button (or Preferences on Mac), and selecting Allow popups for...:

Another way to enable pop-ups in Firefox is to go to the Firefox menu and select either Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac). Under the Content tab, make sure Block popup windows is unchecked:

Please note that unchecking this box will allow popup windows for all websites.

Chrome

If you are trying to export a reference from a database but it doesn't seem to work, check the top of your browser window to see if Chrome blocked a pop-up:

You can add the site as an exception by clicking on the Pop-up blocked button, and selecting Always allow popups from...:

Alternatively, you can click on Manage pop-up blocking to fine-tune how Chrome blocks pop-up windows.

Internet Explorer 9

If you are trying to export a reference from a database but it doesn't seem to work, check the bottom of your browser window to see if Internet Explorer 9 blocked a pop-up:

We would recommend you click Options for this site and select Always allow. Alternatively, you can choose to select More settings to fine-tune how IE9 handles pop-ups.

You can also manage IE9's pop-up blocker by going to Tools > Pop-up Blocker:

Internet Explorer 8 and earlier

If you are trying to export a reference from a database but it doesn't seem to work, check the top of your browser window to see if Internet Explorer blocked a pop-up:

We would recommend you click the yellow bar and select Always allow Pop-ups from This Site... Alternatively, you can choose to select Settings to fine-tune how IE handles pop-ups.

You can also manage IE's pop-up blocker by going to Tools > Pop-up Blocker:

Safari

If you are having trouble exporting references from a database while using Safari, it might be due to Safari's pop-up blocker. Safari blocks pop-ups quite aggressively, and unlike other browsers does not even notify you if a pop-up has been blocked.

To enable pop-ups in Safari, click on the Safari menu and make sure Block Pop-Up Windows is unchecked:

Safari's pop-up blocker has no exceptions list, so it must be turned either completely on or off.
